Pray that God will bless your time of fellowship in his Word.

  1. Read Habakkuk 2:4-20. When and how have you been appalled by the evil of a group, a person, or a situation?
  2. Imagine yourself as one of the Hebrews taken prisoner and being deported by the vicious Chaldeans. Would having memorized this “taunt song” be helpful to you? Why or why not?
  3. This taunt song begins each new stanza (vv. 6-20) with the words, “Woe to him...” What in each stanza is God’s concern?
  4. Each stanza lists consequences the Chaldeans would eventually suffer. In what ways are the consequences (their punishment) similar to their own crimes?
  5. How are the “nonsensical woes” at work in our lives today?
  6. Why are idols useless (vv. 18-19)? What are some of the idols we create and how are they harmful and destructive?
  7. Seeking our own prideful glory at others expense, we’re told, will bring “the cup” of the Lord’s wrath and “utter shame” upon us (v. 16). How does the fact that Jesus emptied himself of his glory and died a shameful death on the cross, benefit us?
  8. How does the picture of God in verse 20 contrast with the previous description of idols? How would it be helpful to be silent before the Lord and in what ways can you daily do so?

Remember to close in prayer for one another.
