Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. What do you most fear?

Read: Psalm 16:5-11. Pray for your study!

1. According to Psalm 16:5-8 what is David’s source of security (vv. 5-8)? What is David’s source of joy and delight (vv. 9-11)? How does the psalm show that assurance (safety, stability) and delight (gladness, pleasure) belong together?

2. Read: Psalm 37:4; Philippians 4:4; Psalm 32:11. What verbs do you notice in these passages? Why would God command delight and joy? What would it look like for you to treat joy as an act of obedience this week?

3. Read: Psalm 42:5-11. How does the psalmist fight for joy? What does he preach to himself? How does fighting for joy reinforce assurance? What spiritual habits currently help you fight for joy? Which ones do you need to recover or strengthen?

4. Read: Psalm 27:4; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Isaiah 40:25-31. What is being “seen” or “beheld” in these passages? Why is “spiritual sight” the root of spiritual delight? How does beholding God’s character and attributes stir your heart to joy?

5. Read: 1 Thessalonians 1:6; James 1:2-4; 2 Corinthians 6:10. List the paradoxes you see. What brings joy during suffering? How does joy in trials testify to the goodness of Christ in you?
