Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. What do you find hard about confession?

Pray for your bible study time together.

1. What does Jeremiah 17:9-10 reveal about the human heart? How does the psalmist invite God to search him in Psalm 139:23-24?

2. Why is sincere openness necessary for genuine confession? How does God’s knowledge and secure love for us in Christ (assurance) free us to be open about our motives and desires?

3. Why is it important that confession always begin with God rather than people (Psalm 51:1-12)? What does God’s character (light, holiness, mercy) reveal about why confession is necessary (1 John 1:5-9)?

4. What must happen before we can remove a speck from someone else’s eye? (Matt. 7:1-5) How does forgiveness lead to much love in Luke 7:47?

5. How should we restore one another in Gal. 6:1-2? What warning and encouragement appear in Hebrews 3:12-13?

6. How does mutual confession protect us from hard- heartedness? Why is it important to have trusted fellow believers you can invite into your struggle (James 5:16)?

7. Why does understanding our own sin deepen compassion?

8. What does confessional camaraderie have to do with fulfilling Jesus’ command in John 13:34-35?
