Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. What do you enjoy about autumn?

Read: Ruth 3. Ask God to bless your study.

OBSERVATION

1. What is the aim of Naomi’s plan (v. 1)? What does Naomi tell Ruth to do (vv. 2-4)?

2. In what ways does the story-teller draw attention to the secretive darkness of Ruth’s meeting with Boaz?

3. What does Ruth ask Boaz to do for her, and why (v. 9)?

4. How does Boaz describe Ruth (v. 11)?

5. What does Boaz send to Naomi (vv. 15–17)?

6. We have heard the word ‘empty’ before (1:21); what has changed for Naomi between then and now?

7. How does the chapter end (v. 18)?

APPLICATION

1. Naomi and Ruth act intentionally in this chapter. This is what faith means. What difference does this make from faith as a purely passive ‘waiting-for-something-to-happen’ thing?

2. During this scene, Ruth is vulnerable. She depends entirely on the noble character of the redeemer. What does it mean to personally cast ourselves entirely on the mercy of Jesus our Redeemer, abandoning other possible sources of security?

3. Ruth grounds her faith on covenant promises. What difference does it make for us to realize that faith in Christ is not a subjective quality—that some have and others don’t—but a claiming of promises made by God to us in Christ?

4. How does Boaz’s reassurance to Ruth help us to grasp and be encouraged by our Redeemer’s reassurance to us, when we call out to him in faith?
