Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. When have you felt over blessed?

Read: Ruth 2. Ask God to bless your study.

1. What threats did Ruth face as a widow and foreigner in a strange country? See verses 9, 15 and 22.

2. How is the word ‘foreigner’ significant within Israel’s history? Read Exodus 2:22 and 22:21.

3. What is said about ‘gleaning’ or picking up leftover grain in the law of Moses? Read Leviticus 19:9, 10; 23:22; Deut 24:19. How does this fit with what Ruth did at Naomi’s instruction?

4. What is a ‘guardian-redeemer’ (v. 20)? Read Leviticus 25:25-28; Numbers 35:6-28, and Deuteronomy 19:4-13.

5. What are the practical implications likely to be as we follow the favour-showing pattern of Boaz and the Lord Jesus towards the weak and marginalized? In what ways can you be a channel of God’s favour this week to others? Your family? Your neighbours? Your co-workers?

6. Why does the image of taking refuge under the wings of the Lord express what Ruth experienced? How could you describe your own faith journey in a way that emphasizes God’s grace?

7. What way in which Boaz showed mercy and justice is the greatest challenge for you? How could Ruth chapter 2 inform your prayers this week?
