Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. When have you felt bereft, or empty?
Read: Ruth 1. Ask God to bless your study.
What three facts are we told in verse 1 about the context of the book of Ruth? Why did Elimelech and Naomi go to Moab and what happens there (vv. 1-5).
When things are tough and challenging in the Christian life, what is it about 'Moab' that becomes so attractive? Be honest. When and how does 'Moab' prove to be a place of death rather than life? Share experiences of disillusion with the world's ways.
What reasons does Naomi give to Orpah and Ruth for going back to their homes in Moab (vv. 8-13)? What stands out about Ruth's famous pledge to Naomi (vv. 16-17) and how does it reveal a faith-filled conversion to the Lord for her?
hat does Naomi say about herself when she returns to Bethlehem (vv. 20-21)? When Naomi says, I went away full, but the Lord brought me back empty what contrasts do you see?
When have you, like Naomi, interpreted hardship as God's abandonment? What helped you in that season?
In what ways does Ruth's sacrificial love for Naomi point to the ultimate sacrificial love of Christ for us?
How can we show sacrificial love towards those who are hurting, including those who might believe and live unlike us?
