Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. Is it important to you to make a name for your self, why or why not?
Read: Ruth 4:1-22. Ask God to bless your study.
OBSERVATION
1. Who is at the ‘gate’ of Bethlehem (vv. 1-2)? What is their posture and role (v. 4, 9-11)? What does their immediate response to Boaz’s request say about Boaz?
2. What are the choices Boaz and the unnamed relative each make in 4:2-10. What do you learn about each man’s priorities?
3. Why is it fitting that no name is recorded for the relative who declined to be the guardian-redeemer for his family (4:5-6, 10)?
4. How did Ruth and Boaz’s faith-fulness and marriage affect Naomi (1:5, 21 to 4:13-17)?
APPLICATION
1. Why does the other (unnamed) redeemer choose not to redeem? What does this show us about the wonder of redemption that Boaz will do? And how can this shed light on the costly generosity of what Jesus, our Redeemer, has done and what difference does this make to our lives?
2.How do you respond to the revelation that this little boy, Obed, will be the grandfather of King David? What does it mean to you that David and Jesus were descended from a Moabitess?
3. How does the kindness of Boaz and love of Ruth spur you on to show the loving-kindness of God to others in practical ways? And how should they help to shape the kind of churches we should to be today?
