Reflection & Discussion
Read: Philippians 1:19-30. Pray for your study time.
When you hear the phrase “on the edge of your seat”, what’s something (sports, movie, moment) that makes you feel that kind of anticipation?
In Philippians 1:19, Paul says he’s confident things will turn out for his “deliverance.” What stands out to you about his confidence, especially since he’s in prison?
That same verse mentions prayer and the Spirit of Jesus Christ. How do those two things work together in Paul’s situation—and what might that look like in our lives?
Still in verse 20, Paul says he wants Christ to be honoured (magnified) in his body. What does it actually look like to “magnify” Jesus in everyday life?
In Philippians 1:21, Paul says, “to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Why do you think he can honestly say that? What makes both options a “win”?
In Philippians 1:27, Paul shifts and says to live a life “worthy of the gospel.” Based on the idea of citizenship, what do you think that kind of life looks like practically?
Romans 8:19 talks about creation “waiting with eager longing.” How does that connect to Paul’s “eager expectation” in Philippians 1:20?
James 1:2–4 says to “count it all joy” in trials. How does that connect to Paul’s view of suffering in Philippians 1:29–30?
Philippians 3:20 says our citizenship is in heaven. How does that connect to what Paul says in 1:27 about how we should live?
In Psalm 91:14–15, God promises to be with His people in trouble. How does that connect to Paul’s confidence in suffering in this passage?
If you’re honest, what tends to control your decisions more - comfort, fear, or your faith in Jesus?
