Reflection & Discussion
Read: Matthew 27. Pray for your study time.
Have you ever expected something to turn out one way, only for it to completely surprise you? What happened?
In Matthew 27:46, Jesus cries out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” What does this reveal about the cost of the cross?
In Matthew 27:51, the temple curtain is torn from top to bottom. What does that symbolize about access to God, and what changed in that moment?
In Matthew 27:51–53, we see the earthquake, rocks splitting, and tombs opening... why do you think Matthew includes these details? What is he trying to show about death?
In Matthew 27:54, the centurion responds in awe. What does this tell us about how people can recognize truth even if they weren’t expecting it? When did you first understand the truth of the resurrection and have faith in Jesus?
In Matthew 27:55–61, the women watch Jesus die and be buried. What do these verses show about their expectations going into Easter morning?
In Luke 24:5, the question is asked: “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” What do you think that question meant for the women in that moment? What does it mean for us now?
What’s one “dead place” in your life (habit, mindset, situation) that you keep going back to, even though it doesn’t give life?
Read Philippians 2:8–11. How does this passage help explain what God was doing through Jesus’ death and resurrection?
Read Romans 6:4–11. What does it mean that we are “dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus”? How does that connect to the idea that Jesus broke open death?
Jesus didn’t just rise from the dead; He started the end of death. How should that change the way you live this week?
