Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. What things do you fear?

Read: Exodus 14:10-18. Pray for your study!

1. What details stand out to you in how God led Israel to the Red Sea (vv. 1-4)? How do the Egyptians respond when they see Israel’s position (vv. 5-9)? What emotions do the Israelites express when trapped (vv. 10-12)?

2. What do you notice about Moses’ response to the people (vv. 13-14)? What does God command Moses to do (vv. 15-18)?

3. What do you observe about God’s presence in the pillar of cloud and fire (vv. 19-20)? What do you notice about the way the sea is divided and the people cross (vv. 21-22)? How is Pharaoh’s army dealt with (vv. 23-28)?

4. Why do you think God purposely led Israel into a position where they seemed trapped? What does this passage show us about God’s power, his purposes, and his way of salvation?

5. What does Israel’s fear reveal about the condition of their hearts? What does Moses’ response teach us about faith in God during seemingly impossible situations?

6. When have you felt “hemmed in” with no way out, like Israel at the sea? How did you respond? What does it look like for us to “stand firm and see the salvation of the Lord” today?

7. How can this passage reshape the way you respond to fear or impossible circumstances? How does remembering God’s past deliverance help us trust him for salvation today?
