Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. Has the Book of Ecclesiastes depressed you or given you hope?

Read: Ecclesiastes 5:1-7; 12:9-14. Pray God helps your study.

1. Why do you think the Preacher valued “words of truth” and careful arrangement of his teachings? How should this inform our approach to truth today?

2. What might it mean that his words are as “goads” and “nails”? (v. 11) Have you ever experienced Scripture as a “goad”— uncomfortable but necessary? Are there any “goads” God is using in your life now to lead you toward greater obedience?

3. In the end, the Preacher directs us to God’s Word rather than his own words. What do 2 Tim. 3:14-17; 2 Peter 1:16-21; and Isa. 55:8-11, tell us about the trustworthiness of the Bible?

4. When was the last time you went to a funeral? How did you feel? Read Eccl 7:2-4. This passage argues that death is a teacher with an invitation. Share what you think that means.

5. Why do you think the Preacher ends the entire book with “Fear God and keep his commandments”? What does it mean to "fear God" in this context? Is it different from being afraid?

6. What impact should verse 14 (God will bring every deed into judgment) have on our daily decisions? Does this verse offer comfort, warning, or both?

7. What part of this closing section in Ecclesiastes 12:9-14 speaks most to you, and why? How can this passage shape the way you approach your work, relationships, or daily routines?
