God invites us to hear his voice and trust that what he has done for us is enough. Through Jesus, we can enter the rest of God’s presence instead of trying to earn it.
Prayer
When you hear the word “rest,” what comes to mind first: sleep, vacation, no homework, being alone, something else?
Are you naturally good at stopping and resting, or do you always feel like you should be doing something?
(Hebrews 3:18–19) Israel had seen God do incredible things, but they still didn’t enter his rest because of unbelief. How can someone know a lot about God without actually trusting him?
(Hebrews 4:3) “We who have believed enter that rest.” What do you think it means to enter God’s rest through faith instead of trying to earn it? Why do we have a hard time with this?
(Psalm 95:7–11) Hebrews quotes this Psalm several times: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” What does Psalm 95 add to our understanding of the warning in Hebrews?
(Exodus 33:14) God tells Moses, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” What does this verse suggest is at the centre of biblical rest?
(Mark 2:23–28) Jesus says, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” How did the Pharisees turn something meant to be a gift into a burden?
Of the three words HEAR, TRUST, ENTER, which one do you think you most need to respond to right now? Why? What’s one rhythm you could build into your week that would remind you that your life doesn’t depend entirely on you?
