Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. What do you like most / least about winter?

Read: Romans 1:1-17. Pray for your study time.

Observation

How does Paul describe himself in verse 1? What titles or roles does he emphasize? What do we learn about the gospel in verses 1-4? According to verses 14-15, how does Paul view his responsibility toward others? What reasons does Paul give for not being ashamed of the gospel? List everything Paul says the gospel is or does in these verses. Who is the gospel for according to verse 16? How is this emphasized?

Interpretation

How has the gospel changed Paul so that he calls himself a “servant” (or “slave”) of Christ? How does verse 5 connect obedience and faith? What kind of obedience is Paul describing? What does Paul likely mean by “the power of God for salvation”? Power from whom, and power to do what? What do you think Paul means by “the righteousness of God”? Is it something God is, does, or gives?

Correlation

Compare Romans 1:1-4 with Philippians 2:6-11. What common truths about Christ do you see? How do Matthew 28:18-20 or Acts 1:8 echo Paul’s sense of obligation in verses 14-15?

Application

Where do you struggle most with being “unashamed” of the gospel? Where do you most need to remember that the gospel is God’s power, not your performance? How does knowing that righteousness comes by faith in Christ alone affect the way you: Approach God? Deal with guilt or failure? Relate to others who don’t know Christ? Why is it critical for churches to remain faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ?
