Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. What would your warning label say?

Read: 1 John 1:5-2:2. Ask God to bless your study.

1. According to 1 John 1:5-6, why is it a lie to claim fellowship with God if we “walk” (live habitually) in “darkness” (wickedness/error)? What does it mean for us to walk in the light?

2. How does Genesis 6:5, Psalm 53:2-3, and Romans 3:9-18, speak to the doctrine of total depravity? Did the drop of food dye in the water help explain this doctrine for you? Why or why not?

3. Read Thomas Goodwin's quote (“In God’s sight there are only two men, Adam and Jesus Christ, and these two men have all other men hanging from their girdle strings.”) and discuss it in light of Romans 5:18-19.

4. What does a person walking in the light still need from Jesus (1:7)? How does Jesus’ blood cleanse us from sin (1 John 2:2; Hebrews 9:1-14; 10:1-18)?

5. Is it fair to say that if you don’t have a free will you don’t have a free choice to sin or not to sin? How is it helpful to distinguish between our free will and our free choice (remembering the desire for coffee and the choice to have it or not)?

6. Even though as Christians we still battle our old sinful nature and desires, how is it that, according to 1 John 1:9 and 2:1-2, we can live to please God? How does Jesus being our ‘advocate’ ensure our right standing before God?

7. Is there any insight from 1 John 1:5-2:2 that you would like to concentrate on and grow spiritually in your life this week?
