Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. What are you thankful to God for?
Read Philippians 2:1-11 God bless your study!
1. Paul calls the Philippians to reflect on the blessings of their common life in Christ. What are these four blessings (2:1)? What encouragement from Christ have you received lately? Or, how has God’s love comforted you?
2. According to verses 2:3-4, what attitudes are the opposite of “selfish ambition” and “conceit”? How does pride rob us of, and blind us from, the abundant life promised in Christ?
3. As the second Person of the eternal Trinity, Jesus had the right to all the worship the Father had. Yet what was Jesus’ mindset toward his rights (2:6)? How is Jesus’ humility different from pridefully over-rating oneself or feeling worthless?
4. Taking on the likeness of a human and the form of a servant was humbling enough for God, the Son. What was Jesus’ ultimate humiliation (2:8)? Why was Jesus willing to be so humiliated? (See 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 4:10.)
5. What is the difference between unity and uniformity? What would it be like if all Christians had the same views and tastes?
6. In what ways does Christ-like humility as seen in verses 2:3-5 create unity in our families, schools, workplaces, and churches?
7. What aspect of Jesus’ mindset, the mindset that is “yours in Christ Jesus” (2:5), will you focus on to live out this week?
